Our last plan put everything — camera, round screen, speaker, light — in the head at the top of the arm. Then the obvious objection arrived: **nobody eats looking up at an arm.** People look at their plate. The arrows belong down by the plate, and the head should carry as little as possible.

So the screen moves to the base. This post is the revised plan, still on paper, and why it costs the same.

## Why it isn't just "move the screen"

The camera has to sit right next to its computer — its connection is a fast parallel bus on a ribbon a few centimetres long. So a computer stays in the head no matter what. If that one computer also drove a screen and speaker in the base, six to eight fast signals would have to run 80 cm down the mast, next to a switching LED and an amplifier. That's the fragile kind of wiring we wanted to avoid.

The fix: a second small board in the base that has the round screen built in. Every fast signal stays short, and the mast carries only power and a slow two-wire serial link.

## The plan now

| Where | What |
|---|---|
| **Camera head** (~44 cm above the board) | Seeed XIAO ESP32S3 Sense + OV5640 autofocus camera + colour-accurate LED light. Nothing else. |
| **Down the mast** | One cable: 5 V power + a 2-wire serial link (each wire paired with a ground) |
| **Base** | Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-1.85: a 1.85" round touch screen with its own speaker and amplifier. It also reads the weight sensor (NAU7802) and the two big buttons. |

The base board tells the head "take a photo"; the head sends it back over the cable. One wire each way, slow and sturdy.

## How we picked the base board

We checked the pins before picking:

- **Waveshare's 1.28" round board: one pin short.** It exposes 6 usable pins; the speaker, sensor bus and serial link need 7. ([pin reference](https://www.waveshare.com/esp32-s3-touch-lcd-1.28.htm))
- **Waveshare's 1.85" round board: fits, with room.** It has a dedicated connector for the sensor bus (I²C) and a separate one for the serial link, and it carries its own speaker amplifier with the speaker included — so the speaker needs no pins at all. ([board wiki](https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-1.85))
- **M5Stack Dial and Elecrow's 1.28" round panel:** a buzzer instead of a speaker and too few free pins for our needs; the Dial is also marked end-of-life.

One wiring catch, noted for later: the board already has a chip at I²C address 0x20, so the button chip moves to 0x21.

## Can the person eating actually see it?

We checked from the diner's seat, about 60 cm in front of the plate and 43 cm above the table. The first attempt failed: the screen sat lower than the cutting board's edge and the plate hid it. The base pod is now taller, and the screen sits above the board, tilted back toward the diner.

## What it costs

Like for like, every electronic part included:

| Plan | Electronics, before tax |
|---|---|
| Last post: one board in the head, separate screen, amp and speaker | about CA$237 |
| **This plan: light head + 1.85" round screen board in the base** | **about CA$240** |

The base board (about US$35) replaces the separate screen, amplifier and speaker, so the total barely moves — and the screen grows from 1.28" to 1.85".

## What we gave up

- **One program became two.** The head and base each run their own firmware. The difference from our earlier two-board plan: they talk over a plain wire, not two devices coordinating over Wi-Fi.
- **Canadian stock of the 1.85" board is unconfirmed**; Waveshare ships direct.

## Please attack these

- **Screen position.** Is above-the-plate, behind it, the right place — or should it sit beside the plate?
- **The serial link.** Any reason not to trust 80 cm of plain serial at a modest speed?
- **Still open from last time:** does the OV5640 module focus at 42–45 cm? Its drawing says 100 cm minimum, which may be a misprint. That remains the first thing we'll test.
