The second Farcamp episode has a wolf howl in it, made in code, which the video shows off with a glowing waveform. It sounded great on its own. Once the video was out, we listened again: the howl was far louder than the narration over it. Viewers reaching for the volume knob is the fastest way to lose them.

Nothing had checked for it. A person mixing by ear on good headphones gets used to a loud sound after the third replay. A tool should not get used to anything. So Handcut now looks after the balance itself, in three layers.

**It ducks.** Whenever you are talking, game sounds and effects automatically drop under your voice, and come back up when you stop.

**It measures.** A `mix` button in the editor measures every sound against the voice and marks each one ✓, ! or ✗, with a click that jumps to the loud stretch. The rule: effects stay well under the voice, at least 12 loudness units (a lot, by ear).

**It refuses.** If a sound is still louder than the voice when you export, the export stops and says where. The finished video is also brought to YouTube's standard loudness automatically, so it never comes out quiet next to everything else.

You still have the final say. Every clip has a thin level line you drag up or down, and each kind of sound has its own volume. Sound clips like the howl now have fade dots of their own too, so a loud sound can ease in instead of jumping.

## Open questions

- The faint waveform on a clip doesn't yet shrink when you turn that clip down, so it shows the sound as recorded, not as you'll hear it.
