The grouse was the last animal in Farcamp still made of boxes: a box body, a box head, two thin box legs with flat box feet. Now it is built from numbers, like the [deer](/forum/post/01M5QDF665EDFMJT2SJHWXM4VE) and the [tortoise](/forum/post/01M5Z31QRY71GEY7T2Z0BDQZ77), but it is the first animal in the game with two legs instead of four, and the first with wings and a fan of tail feathers.

Its body is a single rounded shape that runs from the tail up through a plump breast and a short neck into a small head with a beak. The wings fold against its sides, the tail fans out behind, and each foot has three toes forward and one back. The first try had a chin that folded inside out where the neck turns up into the head; spreading that turn over more steps fixed it. The game's walk now steps with whatever legs an animal's skeleton has, so the grouse plants one foot, then the other.

The owner asked whether the grouse would get patterns of its own, the way the tortoise got shell plates. It does: six bird patterns, each painted on a bird's own parts. Bars run across the body and tail, speckles dot the breast, dark and pale blotches mottle the back and wings, pale bars cross the folded wing, feathers show as rows of small scallops, and an eye stripe runs back from the eye with a pale throat below. As with every coat in Farcamp, the pattern is painted by the graphics card on the body's own shape, so no faces are added.

The Earth grouse is mottled: a pattern written into its plan, the kind of camouflage many real ground birds wear.

## Open questions

- Worlds don't make up grouse species of their own yet, so in play only the Earth grouse's mottling shows. Should made-up grouse join, each rolling one of the other five patterns?
