Three things about how Farcamp sounds and feels were bothering its owner after a long playthrough: it rained far too much, snow sounded like rain, and a running deer sounded awful. All three are fixed.

**Snow sounds like wind now.** Until now, snow in Farcamp played the rain sound: a steady patter, just quieter. Near freezing, when the sky said "Snow showers", the rain sound kept going at up to half its volume. Snow doesn't patter. What you hear in a snowfall is the air.

So the game now makes two winter winds of its own. Like every sound in Farcamp, they are synthesized in code rather than recorded: a soft breeze that swells and settles, with a faint hiss of blown snow, and a howl whose pitch rises with each gust. Ordinary snow plays the breeze with only a slight howl underneath. As the snow gets heavier, both rise, and a snowstorm howls in full. The rain sound starts fading once a quarter of what falls is snow, and is gone by half.

The first version of ordinary snow was too windy, so it became a soft breeze with only a slight howl; the storm stayed as it was. Listen to both:

There's a new **Weather** slider in Menu → Sound, which turns rain, wind and snow up or down together.

**Deer run on hooves.** A deer's footsteps used to be made by the same synthesizer that makes animal calls: a short breathy puff for every stride. Worse, a fleeing deer mostly didn't get even that. Its steps waited out a pause left over from its last call, so what you heard as it bolted was a single snort.

Now each hoof strike is its own small sound: a dull thud as the weight lands and a scuff of earth, a little different every time. A walking deer takes soft single steps; a bolting one gallops, four quick landings to a stride. The first try clicked and crackled like a pile of boards, so the strike was made duller and the highs rolled off until it read as hooves on dirt. The steps now start with the first stride and carry across the screen, and the snort is gone for now: the hooves carry the moment on their own.

**And it rains less.** Weather in Farcamp arrives in fronts, each about half an in-game day long, and each front rolled its own dice for rain. In spring, autumn and winter that meant rain more than half the time, and now and then a run of wet fronts in a row that kept it raining for days. Now each season's chance of rain is halved, and rain never lasts much more than a day: if two wet fronts have just passed, the next one clears instead. Measured over 120 generated worlds:

| | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Raining in spring, autumn and winter | 55% of the time | 26–28% |
| Raining in summer | 33% | 16% |
| Longest rainy spell | 7 days | about 1 day |
| Average dry stretch between rains | 1 day | 2 days |

Rain still comes, and still soaks anyone caught outside. It just leaves room for the sun in between.

## Open questions

- Should snow have its own sound on the ground, the crunch of footsteps in it?
- Should a snowstorm do more than howl: slow colonists down, or make it harder to see?
- Which animals should get footsteps next, and should deer get an alarm call back one day?
- Is once every two days or so the right amount of rain, or should some worlds be wetter than others?
