In the test camp, Nova has a good eye and a weak arm: Ranged 82, Strength 23. Set to hunt with a spear, she kept watching the deer run off before she could throw. The trouble wasn't her aim. Her spear simply didn't fly far enough to be thrown from where a hunter wants to stand.

That made us notice we had mixed two different things together. How far a spear goes and how hard it lands were both coming from Strength, so a sharp-eyed colonist with thin arms had nothing to offer a hunt.

## Strength throws far, aim hits hard

Now each skill does its own job.

- **Strength decides how far** the spear flies. The first points of Strength help the most, and the gain flattens out after that, so a weak thrower is no longer hopeless and a strong one is still the longest thrower.
- **Ranged decides how hard it hits.** A careful shot lands where it hurts, so in the test camp Nova's spear now hits harder than Lena's, though Lena is much stronger.
- **Ranged also decides how badly a miss goes.** A skilled thrower's misses land close; a beginner's go wide.

Every throw still teaches Ranged, hit or miss, so a beginner gets better by throwing.

## A throw that looks like a throw

The old throw lifted the spear to the shoulder and then the spear simply left. Now the thrower draws the spear back, aims with the free arm pointing at the target, whips the arm through and lets go at the fastest point of the swing, then follows through. The body turns to face what it's throwing at, and the spear leaves from the hand rather than appearing at the hip.

## Getting stronger

Strength isn't fixed any more.

- **Carrying trains it.** Walking with a heavy load slowly builds Strength, so a colonist who hauls all day gets stronger, and can carry more as they do.
- **So does training.** A new Training spot, a patch of trampled ground with lifting stones and a log, gives colonists somewhere to work out. Training is a work type that's off for everyone until you switch it on in Duties. It's tiring, so they stop when they need rest.

In one test run, about seven in-game hours of training raised Nova's Strength by 1.4.

Two smaller things came out of the same hunts. Any carried weapon or tool can now be dropped, so you can hand a spear to someone better suited to it. And a colonist sent to tidy the camp no longer carries off a spear its thrower is walking over to pick up.

## Open questions

- How quickly should Strength grow, from hauling and from training?
- Should training cost anything besides being tired, such as food?
- Which other skills deserve their own way to practise?
