Until now, a colonist bitten by an animal had two choices, and neither was theirs. You could draft them and fight it yourself, or they ran. A practised fighter who got bitten retreated like everyone else.

Now each colonist's window has a **Militia** box, just under the one for carrying bandages. Think of a volunteer fire brigade: everyone goes about their normal work, and when the alarm sounds the volunteers drop what they're doing, deal with it, and go back to work. A colonist with Militia ticked works the same way. When an animal charges or attacks nearby, they turn and fight without being drafted. Once it backs off or falls, they go back to their jobs. They don't chase it into the woods.

The alarm is for the whole crew, not just the volunteer. If an animal goes for a teammate close by, a Militia colonist steps in for them too.

Not everyone can volunteer. The box is only open to colonists with a Melee or Ranged skill of 60 or more. Everyone else still sees it, greyed out, with the reason when they hover over it, so it's clear what it would take. It starts switched off, so nobody fights unless you choose it.

Courage has limits, too. A heavy burst of wounds can still send a Militia colonist into a panic, and then they run like anyone else.

The clip runs at normal speed. Lena is the colonist at the top. Watch for the sword above their head as they go for the wolf, and then for what doesn't happen once it runs: Lena doesn't give chase and doesn't flee. This small test camp has no work waiting, so they stand ready for the next job.

## Open questions

- Is 60 the right skill bar, or should more colonists be allowed to volunteer?
