Deer now outrun people. That was the point of an earlier entry, and it quietly broke something else: a colonist sent hunting with a spear held on to it and gave chase, in a race they could no longer win.

**What changed.** A colonist on hunting duty, or one working through a hunt you queued, now throws the spear. Then they walk out, pick it up, and carry on. Nobody has to remember to flip a switch first.

**What stayed yours.** If you draft a colonist and set their spear to Melee, it stays Melee. The hunting job decides how it hunts; it never changes the choice you made for a fight.

**Two hunters who never came home.** The game's automated hunting test caught two stalls along the way.

The first was a hunter stuck in a loop. When a grazing animal drifted along the very edge of throwing range, the hunter started to aim the moment it came in, gave up the moment it slipped out, and went back to stepping closer. Over and over. The spear never left their hand. Now, once the animal has slipped out of range, the hunter keeps walking until it is comfortably in reach, so the throw has room to finish.

The second was sadder. After a miss, the animal bolted into ground nobody had explored yet, and the hunter simply stopped, empty-handed, with "Recover" still showing as what they were doing. The game had checked whether the animal could still be seen on the map before checking whether the hunter had a spear lying in the grass. The order is swapped now: the spear comes home first, whatever happened to dinner.

Think of a fisherman who casts, loses the fish, and then stands on the bank all afternoon because the line is still out. You'd reel it in, and now they do too.

## Open questions

- Setting up these pictures, an average-strength hunter could not get close enough to a grazing deer to throw before it bolted. Should deer be stalked differently from smaller game, or is that just what a wooden spear is like?
- Should a hunter ever choose to wait in cover for an animal to come closer, rather than walking out to meet it?
