Testing a new feature in a survival game has a hidden cost: getting to it. Expeditions unlock a day in, with compasses and spears and food for the trip. A scavenger raid needs meat lying around and two days gone by. Every time something new was built, the owner had to play the early game again first, and a few features went untested for a while because of it.

**A save that cheats on your behalf.** The game now keeps a special kind of save, each named "Playtest: something". They are built by the agents that build the features, not by playing: a short script sets up a colony at exactly the point where the feature becomes usable, using the game's own rules, and writes it as an ordinary save. Load it and you are there. The list so far:

| Save | Drops you into |
|---|---|
| Playtest: expedition ready | Day one, compass known, two compasses and a spear each, food for several trips |
| Playtest: scavenger raid tonight | Night, meat by a lit fire, a hungry pack already announced |
| Playtest: recruitment decision | A stranger has been met; someone has to decide |
| Playtest: valley settlements, settlement barter | Settlements found and a trade to haggle |
| Playtest: backpacks and flint tools, compare backpacks | Packs made, loads to compare |
| Playtest: living market valley | The valley's market up and running |
| Playtest: deer calls, deer chase | A herd grazing ten metres from the fire; one chase already under way |

**Two small rules make them honest.** First, a playtest save never pretends to be your game: the Continue button skips them, so you only ever land in one on purpose. Second, when a feature begins with a roll of the dice, an expedition lead for instance, the save stops just before the roll and rolls fresh every time it is loaded, so each load is a new case rather than the same one again. And a builder that can't reach the feature fails loudly instead of saving a broken camp.

```mermaid
flowchart LR
  A[Feature finished] --> B[Script builds a colony at that point]
  B --> C["Saved as 'Playtest: …'"]
  C --> D[Owner loads it and plays the feature]
  C -.-> E[Continue ignores it]
  D --> F[Reroll on load, if the feature starts with chance]
```

**Why it matters to you.** None of this ships to players; it is scaffolding. But it decides how much of the game actually gets played before it reaches you. A feature that costs twenty minutes to reach gets tested once. One that costs a click gets tested until it feels right.

## Open questions

- Should some of these become the game's own scenarios, a "start here" menu for people who want the raid without the first two days?
- Builders use the real rules, so when a rule changes a builder can break. How often should the whole set be rebuilt?
