Colonists now have a mood, and it matters. Keep someone cold, hungry and working with no break for long enough, and eventually they stop taking orders.

## What moves it

Hunger, thirst, cold, being soaked, pain, sickness and exhaustion all drag mood down; a good meal and a proper night's sleep lift it. It changes gradually, not with every passing need. Hover a colonist's mood, or their portrait, to see the biggest things pulling it up or down. Their face in the portrait shows it too.

Mood changes how well they work: from 85% of their normal pace when they're miserable to 110% when they're content. It doesn't change how fast they walk or how hard they hit.

## Time off

The first version gave every new camp the same evening off, five to eight, for everyone at once. That has changed: colonists now take their breaks on their own clock. Each one has their own pace at which the need for a rest builds up and wears off, so two people with identical timetables and the same morning will still stop at different times and for different lengths. During the hours marked "Anything" on the timetable, a colonist whose reserve runs low takes a personal break and goes back to work once it has recovered, and a relaxing colonist shows it with a small icon over their head. Camps that still had the old shared evening have been moved to "Anything"; a timetable you changed yourself is left alone. Marking hours as Work forbids these breaks; marking them Relax keeps the time free whether they need it or not.

What they do with a break is unchanged: quiet time on their own, company if someone nearby is relaxing too, resting outdoors when it's safe and dry, sitting by a lit fire, or resting under cover. Each colonist has a couple of favourites, and doing the same thing over and over stops helping as much, so they mix it up. You can always override a break with work.

## When it gets too much

When someone's mood stays very low for too long, the strain builds up. A warning appears under the crew portraits, and you can click it to see what's wrong. If nothing changes, they break down. For a while they won't accept orders. Some withdraw and rest, some refuse to work, and some wander restlessly. Nobody gets violent and nothing gets broken. They'll still eat, drink, run from danger and accept care.

How long a breakdown lasts depends on how bad things got: a couple of hours if they were only low, half a day if they hit rock bottom. Afterwards they're protected from another one for half a day, and whatever orders they had are gone rather than quietly resumed.

## Open questions

- Should colonists form friendships, so that who they relax with starts to matter?
- Personal breaks mean the camp is rarely all at rest together. Is a shared evening, now and then, worth bringing back on purpose?
