The campfire used to sound like weather. Under the crackle there was a low, steady roar, and with the camera close it felt less like sitting by a fire and more like sitting out in a storm. This week the fire got a new voice, a way to tune it by ear, and a sense of how far away you are.

**The new fire.** Listen to a real campfire and it is three things at once: a quick, dry crackle, a soft body of burning wood underneath, and up close a faint hiss of moisture cooking out of the logs. Farcamp's fire is now built from exactly those three, each made by the game's code, nothing recorded. An occasional pop was in the first version too, and the owner took it out: it drew the ear every time.

**Tuning by ear, not by number.** A fire has a dozen dials: how often it crackles, how bright the crackle is, how loud the hiss, where the hiss sits in pitch. Guessing them from a description never landed. So the game grew a small tool, the Sound Lab: every dial as a slider, the fire playing while you drag, and a Save button that writes the result straight into the file the game reads. The owner tuned the fire there, and the rule now is that no sound goes into Farcamp until the owner has heard it.

**Distance.** A fire doesn't just get quieter as you walk away from it; it changes. The hiss is gone a few steps out. The body fades over the length of a field. The crackle carries furthest of all, because sharp sounds do, and the air takes the high, bright part of everything first. The game now plays the fire as separate layers, each fading over its own distance, with a filter that dulls the sound the further off you are. Zooming the camera all the way in is standing at the fireside; zooming out is walking away.

A small bug on the way: the first version counted the camera as five metres from the fire even when it was as close as it could get, so the hiss never reached you. Fully zoomed in now means fully there.

The campfire has its own slider under Menu → Sound.

## Open questions

- Should the fire's voice follow its fuel: a fresh log loud and wet, embers quiet and dry?
- Rain on a fire, and wind through it, are not heard yet. Should they be?
- The same distance idea now shapes the birds. Which sound deserves it next: water, wind, the animals?
