Berries only go so far. This part started the first big goal on the colony's list, food: catching it, cutting it up, and keeping it from going bad.

## Tools for hunting

The hunting kit comes from a handful of new recipes, all in the recipe file:

- **A wooden pole**, shaped from two sticks with a knife.
- **Arrowheads** knapped from stone, or made from bone.
- **A hunting spear**: pole, arrowhead and twine. Longer reach than a knife.
- **A sling**, which throws pebbles gathered at the water's edge.
- **A basic bow and arrows**: longer range and easier to aim, but the arrows need feathers.
- **Snares**: small traps set along animal routes, checked and reset by whoever has the hunting duty.

The sling and bow need a **tier 2 crafting station**, built from logs and twine. Aiming isn't guaranteed either: a colonist with poor agility and ranged skill misses a lot, and can even hit whoever's standing in the way.

Spears have grown since: they now come in wood, stone and bone, and can be thrown and fetched back. See [Throw it, then go get it](https://opensystems.app/projects/01M3B70Q318G1G8N0NSV63ME5X/journal/01M3RVZXG6MHFXC889P9M73Y38).

## Snares and slings

Snares do their own hunting. Whoever has the hunting duty sets one, and a rabbit or grouse that wanders across it may get caught. The better the hunter who set it, the more often it catches. They also bring the catch home and set the snare again, which costs one twine. Ten catches wear a snare out.

The sling is the cheap weapon, made from leather and twine. Its pebbles hit softer than arrows and don't carry as far, and it's a little harder to aim than a bow.

## From the field to the pot

Bones from a carcass can become tools: a bone knife butchers faster than a stone one, but wears out much sooner. A big carcass has to be carried in both hands, so a colonist hauling one can't do anything else until they set it down.

Butchering with a knife turns a carcass into meat, and meat can be eaten, but raw meat is a gamble and it spoils fast.

## Keeping food

Food now goes off, and the temperature decides how fast. Raw meat lasts a few days, and berries about a week; in real cold, both last much longer. The **drying rack** is the answer for meat: six portions at a time, half a day to dry, and dried meat keeps far longer.
