Food in Farcamp goes off. Raw meat lasts a couple of days and fish even less. Drying racks helped, but a colony that wants to get through a lean stretch needs something better. People have solved this for thousands of years with salt, and now the colonists can too, once they find some.

**Some lakes are salty.** Not every lake is fresh any more. On a new world, now and then a lake turns out to be salt water: you can't drink it, and no fish live in it. There's always at least one freshwater lake, but the one nearest your landing might be the salty one. Every lake has to be checked on its own; knowing one is fresh tells you nothing about the next.

**Something to carry it in.** To use salt water, the colonists first need a container. There are three ways to get one:

| Container | How you get it |
|---|---|
| Hollowed-log pot | Hollow out a log with a knife, once you've worked out how |
| Tortoise shell | Hunt a tortoise (a new animal, found in pairs near fresh water on some worlds) and keep the shell |
| Bladder bag | Butcher a big animal and, with luck, recover its bladder intact. Better hunters succeed more often. Tie it off with twine |

**Let the sun do the work.** Build an evaporation stand out of sticks and twine. A colonist carries four portions of brine from the salt lake, pours them into the stand, and waits. Sun, warmth and wind dry the water away over about a day, faster on a warm windy day and slower in the cold, and rain stops it altogether unless the stand has a roof over it (though a roof slows the drying too). What's left is salt.

**Salting food.** With salt in the store, a colonist can salt meat or fish: one unit of salt per portion. Salted food keeps for about three weeks at a mild temperature, longer in the cold and under cover. A few honest limits:

- Salting doesn't add food. A portion has the same calories salted or not.
- It doesn't rescue food that's nearly off. It keeps what freshness is left, rather than making it fresh again.
- It doesn't make raw meat safe to eat. Salted raw meat still needs cooking, but it can be salted first and cooked much later.

```flow3d
Salt lake | Evaporation stand | Store | Crafting spot
1 -> 2 | A colonist fills a pot, shell or bag with brine and carries it back.
2 -> 3 | Sun and wind dry it into salt over about a day, and it goes into storage.
3 -> 4 | A pinch of salt per portion turns meat or fish that would spoil in days into food that keeps for weeks.
```

## Open questions
- How rare should salt lakes be? Right now it's a gamble whether your world has a handy one at all.
- Should brine or salt be worth carrying on longer trips away from camp, now that expeditions exist?
