Hunting brought meat into camp, and with it a new problem: raw meat is a gamble. This part built the kitchen, step by step, from a campfire to a brick stove where colonists invent their own dishes.

## Some things everyone knows

Some cooking needs no discovering. Any campfire can **char meat**: it isn't fancy, it adds a little food value, and it takes away the risk of eating meat raw. A better **cooking fireplace**, the third tier with a cooking stone built in, can **barbecue** meat properly.

## Building a kitchen

A real kitchen takes a chain of work. Mud from the ground becomes **clay**; clay is shaped and fired into **bricks** at the cooking fireplace; bricks build the **cooking station**, a brick stove.

## Inventing dishes

At the cooking station, a cook can **experiment**: choose raw ingredients and try a new combination. Every attempt ends with a **taste test**. Three things can happen:

- **It's a discovery.** The dish becomes a known recipe the colony can cook again.
- **It's safe but not a discovery.** The colony still gets something edible, just poor food, which the cook can eat or store.
- **It makes the cook sick.** The combination goes on an unsafe list, and the station won't let anyone cook it again. It doesn't say *which* ingredient was the problem.

A skilled cook discovers more often and makes better food, and every attempt makes them a little better, even the ones that go wrong.

It's the same idea as the unknown plants: you learn what's safe by trying, and sometimes that costs something. The next time something unfamiliar turns up in the forest, trying it becomes a real decision.
