Farcamp isn't the first try at this game. Last winter, over about three weeks around the new year, there was **Open Colony**.

The pitch was big. It was a colony sim in your web browser, shared with everyone else playing, and running day and night whether you were logged in or not. Its tagline was *"Build by Day. Survive by Night."* The twist was that you wouldn't click orders. You'd type them in plain English, like *"If raided, retreat to bunker"*, and your colonists would keep following them while you slept.

## How far it got

Further than you might think, and not as far as it hoped.

- **Working:** colonists walking around a map and routing around walls you placed, getting hungry and going to pick berries from bushes, plants spreading and thinning out, and a world that was still there after a restart. Typed orders worked too, as an early prototype.
- **Built, but never usable:** gathering jobs, crafting, a gathering hut and a stone axe. They existed underneath, but in the end you couldn't reliably click on a building to use them.
- **Only on paper:** combat, raids, the always-on shared world, and a fixed number of colonists per world that players would lure away from each other.

## What stopped it

The project's own notes tell the story. The same problem kept coming back: the automated checks said a feature was finished, but when you opened the game, it wasn't there. One note from that winter puts it plainly: *"User opened game and saw nothing."* The last test run shows 1,203 checks passing, next to a gathering hut nobody could click on.

A lot of the effort also went into managing the work rather than doing it. By the end, the project's notes and rulebooks ran nearly twice as long as the game itself.

## What's different now

| | Open Colony (last winter) | Farcamp (now) |
|---|---|---|
| Time spent | About three weeks | About a week |
| Where it runs | Web browser, flat shapes | Desktop game with lighting, weather, seasons and sound |
| Playing together | Planned; only ever ran on one machine | Working: friends join your world with a code |
| Typed orders | Plain English, turned into rules | Scripts you write, and keep for your next world |
| Checking it works | Checks that never looked at the screen | Checks that play the game and click the real buttons |

The ideas mostly survived. Colonists who run on their own, a world that pushes back at night, and friends in the same world are all still here. What changed is how the game gets built and checked. The next two entries take those one at a time: why "all tests passing" wasn't enough, and how typing orders in plain English turned into scripts you take with you.

## Open questions

- Open Colony wanted a world that kept running while you were offline. Farcamp doesn't do that yet. Is it something you'd want, or would you rather your camp waited for you?
