Until now, the world ended at the edge of what your colonists could see. Now there's a reason to go further.

**First, a compass.** Out in the world there are a few chunks of lodestone, a stone that pulls at iron. Study one with a stick at the research spot and your colonists can work out a primitive compass, then make one from a lodestone and two sticks.

**Then, a lead.** Once the camp has a compass, something turns up now and then: smoke beyond a ridge, a light flickering in distant trees, three calls from over the hills. Each one tells you how long the walk is and how long you've got before the chance is gone.

**Packing for the trip.** Pick someone to go. They collect the compass, their weapon, and enough safe food for the trip there and back with a little spare, from your actual stores. If there isn't enough, they stay home. Water they find along the way.

**What's out there.** While they're gone, they're gone: off the map, living on what they carried. When they arrive, you decide what they do.

Skills matter: a good hunter reads the creature better, a strong one does better in a fight, and trying and failing can cost an injury. Whatever they bring back is limited to what they can carry, and they walk home the same way they came.

There are six places to find in this first version, each with its own choices, and some lead to a second decision rather than ending on the first.

## Open questions

- Should expeditions take more than one colonist, so a team can split the risks?
- What would you want to find out there next: other people, rare materials, or places worth coming back to?
