Until now, everything your colonists knew, they had to work out for themselves. Now the world leaves them a few clues: tools lying under trees, and sealed wooden crates waiting to be opened.

**Things lying around.** Every new world hides eighteen scattered tools and ten sealed crates, tucked beside trees away from the landing site. A find might be a stone axe, a knife, a wooden spear, a sling or a pole. None of them is new: each one turns up somewhere between half worn and nearly whole. What's hidden where is fixed by the world, so it doesn't change on a reload, and once something is taken it's gone for good.

**Breaking a crate open.** You can't see inside a crate until someone opens it. A strong colonist gets through it faster, a knife helps, and an axe helps most, though it wears the axe a little. Inside there might be bricks, clay, leather, rope, sticks, stone, even an axe or a bow. Whatever comes out lands on the ground as ordinary supplies for the colony to carry home.

**Taking it apart to learn how it's made.** This is where a find really pays off. Bring an item you don't know how to make to the research spot, choose *Study item*, and a colonist works out how it was made, the way someone might take apart a clock to learn how to build one. Each attempt has the same odds as any other research, and it isn't free: every try knocks a fifth off the tool's condition, whether it works or not, so a battered find may only survive a few goes. Studying bricks teaches you bricks, not the buildings made from them. And knowing how to make something doesn't hand you the materials or the workbench to make it.

## Open questions

- Who left all this lying around? The game doesn't say yet.
- Once a world's salvage is gone, it's gone. Should new finds ever turn up later?
