Some of the work on a game is invisible when it goes well. This is one of those stories: a run of slowdowns, and what came out of fixing them.

**It started with a fireplace.** Right after building one, the game dropped below 10 frames a second the moment it was unpaused, though it ran at about 30 while paused. That report kicked off a hunt, and the hunt kept turning up the same kind of problem: parts of the game searching far more of the world than they needed to. Picture looking for a spoon by opening every drawer in the house, attic included, every single time you want a spoon. One of them was the way colonists look for building supplies, which also walked past lakeshore tiles that had nothing to do with the job. Fixing it brought one captured step of the simulation down from about 41 milliseconds to about 15.

**Fixing the habit, not just the bug.** Finding these one at a time wasn't going to end, so the approach changed. The game now keeps one shared index of what is where: its resources, animals, camp buildings and loose piles, sorted by kind, by the material they give and by place. Anything that needs "the nearest sticks" asks the index instead of walking the whole world. And there's now a test with ten thousand trees that have nothing to do with anything, which counts how much work the searches do. A new feature that slips back into opening every drawer fails that test.

  Q[A colonist needs sticks] --> I[Shared index: by kind, by material, by place]
  I --> R[Only the stick sources that could matter]
  R --> P[Then the careful checks: distance, reservations, paths]
```
**The stutter.** Every second or two, walking animations seemed to skip a beat. One of the hitches came from uncovering new ground: each time, the game redrew every resource in the world instead of just the newly revealed patch. That took about 82 milliseconds; now it takes about 1.
**Time that doesn't depend on your screen.** Game time used to be tied to the frame rate, so switching to another window slowed the whole world down. Now the game's clock runs steadily, whatever the screen is doing.
For a rough sense of where it stands: on built-in Intel graphics at 2560×1440, a short test on a real colony ran at about 50 frames a second at normal speed and about 26 at triple speed. That's one measurement, not a promise. Triple speed simply asks the game to do three times the work.
## Open questions
- How smooth does triple speed need to be before it feels right?
- Which moments in your own games have felt slow? Those are the next drawers to check.
