The lakes in Landfall used to be scenery and something to drink. Now there's food in them, and the colonists have something new to catch it with.

**Hooks and rods.** Fishing starts with small discoveries. Shape a bone into a hook with a knife; tie it to a wooden pole with some twine, and you have a rod. Switch on fishing in a colonist's duties, point at a lake, and pick the bait: none, berries or meat. The angler fetches the rod and bait, finds a clear spot on the bank, and fishes. Each catch goes back to storage.

You never see an exact count of fish. Instead each lake gives a hint: "plenty of movement", "occasional ripples" or "quiet water". Lakes hold different mixes of fish, and they can be fished out. A depleted species comes back slowly, about one fish every couple of days.

**Fish nobody has named.** Like the plants and animals, fish are invented fresh for each world: six species built from a few basic shapes (minnows, carp, catfish, and a couple of stranger ones). A new catch is described by its colour and shape until someone studies it. Then the colony learns its name, how rare it is, how skilled an angler needs to be to land it, and which bait it likes. Using the bait it likes helps a lot; any bait helps a little. The rare fish need a practised angler.

Raw fish is a gamble, with a one-in-two chance of making someone ill, and it spoils faster than meat. Charring it over any fire makes it safe, and grilling it at a proper cooking fire or stove makes it better.

**Spears.** Spears now come in three kinds. A wooden one is just a sharpened pole. Tie on a stone or a bone head and it hits harder.

| Spear | Made from | Hits | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden | a pole, sharpened with a knife | lightest | fairly well |
| Stone | wooden spear + stone head + twine | hard | longest |
| Bone | wooden spear + bone head + twine | hardest | shortest |

A spear can be used up close or thrown, and you pick which with a simple Melee / Throw switch on the colonist. A thrown spear really flies: it lands somewhere, and the thrower has to walk over and pick it up before throwing again, unless something dangerous is close by.

**Spear fishing.** A spear works in the water too. It needs no bait, but it's harder than using a rod, and a speared fish is damaged, so you lose a good part of it (20 to 45 percent, less for a skilled fisher). It's the rough-and-ready way to fish, and in skilled hands it's still worth doing.

## Open questions
- None of this has been balanced by real play yet: how long a lake should last, how rare the rare fish should be, and how much a speared fish should lose.
- Should the rare fish be worth a special trip, with better calories or something only they give?
