Landfall is set on an alien planet, so its animals shouldn't all be rabbits and deer. But a player still needs to read a creature at a glance: is that thing going to run, or charge? So the animals got the same treatment the plants did. Each new world now invents its own.

**Four families, endless members.** Every new world makes twelve species, three from each of four families:

- **hoppers**, which behave like rabbits;
- **grazers**, which behave like deer;
- **scavengers**, which behave like coyotes;
- **tusked foragers**, which behave like boars.

The family decides how an animal acts. Everything else is rolled fresh: its coat and markings, its size, whether it grows horns, plates or strange sensing stalks, how well armoured it is, how sharp its senses are, how aggressive it is, when it's awake, where it likes to live, and how much meat it's worth. A heavy, armoured animal ends up slower, so a big one is dangerous in a different way from a fast one.

One in five species is a plain Earth animal: a real rabbit, a real deer. Nobody knows yet what they're doing on this planet. That's a story for later.

**Nobody knows their names.** A colony that has just landed has never seen any of these creatures. Until someone studies one, the game calls it what the colonists would: an "unknown jade hopper", a "small unidentified animal".

Observing takes patience. A colonist has to get close enough to watch without spooking it, and how close depends on how sharp the animal's senses are. The cleverer the colonist, the faster it goes; a good hunter picks it up quicker too. If the animal bolts or attacks, the study pauses, and anyone can pick it up again later. Once one colonist works out what a species is, the whole colony knows it.

Colonists also remember what they've seen an animal *do* (raid the food, hunt, run, defend its ground) even before they know what it is. That shows up when you inspect the animal, without giving away numbers nobody has measured.

**Each world keeps its own zoo.** The game remembers every species it has invented. Once there are enough, a new world reuses half of them and invents the other half, so familiar faces turn up next to new ones. Replaying the same world always brings back the same animals.

## Open questions
- Why are there Earth animals on an alien planet? We haven't decided yet.
- Nobody has played enough to know whether the new animals are balanced: how often a big armoured forager should be a threat, or how much a rare species' meat should be worth.
