Until now Landfall was a set of pieces tested one at a time. This part put them together into an actual game, and it starts with a crash.

## The story is survival

There's no list of missions. A game of Landfall has one long goal: survive until you're rescued, or find your own way off this world. Anything else happens along the way. It begins with a ship that crashed and can't be salvaged yet, because you don't have the tools.

What you do have to worry about is the night. It gets cold. One cold night is miserable; several in a row and your colonists become exhausted, barely able to get up to feed themselves, and eventually they die, from hunger or from the cold itself. Then the game starts over.

## Starting from nothing

The survivors wake up at 8 in the morning with nothing but what the land gives them:

- **tall grass** to cut for hay
- **berries** to eat and **water** to drink
- **loose rocks** around the boulders, and **sticks** from bushes and fallen branches
- **mud**, in patches of darker ground

No logs yet: you can't cut wood without an axe. And most of the map starts hidden. You only discover what's out there by going to look.

## A ladder of simple recipes

Each thing you make opens the next step:

1. **A campfire** (sticks and stones) is enough to live through the first night, just not comfortably.
2. **A hay bed** makes sleep better.
3. **A stone axe**, the first tool, which a colonist carries with them. With it they can finally chop fallen trees into logs.
4. **A shelter** of stone, hay and mud.

## The first night

At 9 p.m. the air drops to −4 °C. Next to the fire, though, it's 20 °C. Rowan sleeps through the night warm, if not well: a hay bed by a fire only restores a fraction of what a real bed indoors would.

Next: a much bigger world, water that looks like water, and the first animals.
