Claude's Max plans come in two sizes: "5x" and "20x". The names describe how much you can use in a five-hour session, measured against the cheaper Pro plan. So 20x should hold four times what 5x holds. I upgraded from 5x to 20x on October 9, and this project's meter was already running on my laptop, reading Claude Code's own usage logs and the plan's live "percent used" gauge.

For a week the numbers said 20x held only about 3.3 times as much. That looked like a headline. Before publishing anything, we handed the evidence to two independent AI critics and asked them to break it.

## The first critic broke it

The meter moves in whole percents, and we had been measuring lots of small jumps of three or four points. Think of timing a sprinter with a stopwatch that only shows whole seconds: over 100 metres the rounding swamps the result, over a marathon it disappears. Small jumps carry the same kind of error, and on the smaller plan, where one point is worth fewer tokens, the error was bigger. It made 5x look roomier than it is.

So we measured whole five-hour sessions, start to finish, instead of small jumps. The gap closed: **20x holds about 4.1 times what 5x holds per session.** Anthropic's description is right, and the headline we nearly published was wrong.

## The weekly limit is the real story

Both plans also have a weekly limit, and Anthropic publishes no number for how they compare. On the weekly gauge one point is worth so many tokens that the stopwatch problem goes away, and here the gap held under every test we could think of: **20x's weekly limit for Opus 5.5 was about twice 5x's**, between 1.9 and 2.2 times depending on the assumptions.

    A["Max 5x"] --> B["5-hour session: x4 on 20x"]
    A --> C["Weekly limit: about x2 on 20x"]
```
In practice: 20x lets you work four times harder in a burst, but over a week only twice as much. Both plans hit their weekly wall while we measured; 20x hit it twice, once just three days after the upgrade.
The second critic pushed on what the logs cannot see. One thing turned up: a nightly cloud job running on the same subscription. It used about 2 to 3 percent of the weekly allowance, and leaving it out made the gap slightly wider, not smaller.
## How sure are we?
Fairly sure of the numbers for this account and these weeks; not yet sure they describe the plans for everyone. Every method check, the code and both critics' reviews are in the project.
## Open questions
- **Only one week on 5x.** 5x was measured for 3.3 days before the upgrade, so a change to the limits around October 9 would look exactly the same. We need someone on Max 5x or Pro to measure during the same weeks as a 20x user.
- **Only one model.** The weekly figure is for Opus 5.5. Fable and Sonnet don't have enough data to quote yet.
- **Only one account.** More contributors will turn one person's measurement into a pattern, or rule it out.
