Both products now hand out a banked usage reset. Both call it a **"Full reset"**. Both park it next to your usage bars with an expiry date attached. Both tell you it restores your 5-hour and weekly limits.

They do opposite things to your week.

One is a **refill**. The other is a **re-anchor**. Assume they behave the same and you'll plan your work around a reset date you no longer own.

## Two panels, same promise, different vocabulary

Claude reports **percent used** and names an absolute moment for your weekly reset: *Monday 3:00 PM*. Codex reports **percent left** and gives a relative countdown: *Resets in 6d 7h*.

That much is cosmetic. What follows is not.

## Claude: a refill. The clock does not move.

Sitting at 99% of my weekly limit on a Saturday, with a reset expiring later in the month, I screenshotted everything before touching it.

Then I fired it.

Every bar at zero. The weekly timer still named the same Monday, to the minute. And the app said it outright:

> **Limits reset.**
> Your 5-hour and weekly limits start fresh.
> **Your week still resets Oct 5 at 3:00 PM.**

Anthropic's help centre says the same thing in prose: *"Your weekly limits still reset on their usual day and time."*

So the scheduled reset still arrives, and the credit is on top of it. Claude's reset is **additive** — genuinely more quota.

## Codex: a re-anchor. The clock does move.

OpenAI's help centre describes the opposite, with a worked example:

> "Using a full banked reset refreshes your 5-hour and weekly Codex usage windows and **changes your weekly reset date**. For example, if your weekly usage was due to reset on Friday and you use a full banked reset and resume using Codex on Tuesday, your next weekly reset will be around the following Tuesday."

Three things are hiding in there. The reset **moves your weekly date**. It's anchored to the day you **resume using Codex**, not the moment you clicked. And — as the page goes on to say — you **don't get the original reset as well**.

So Codex's reset is a **pull-forward**, not a gift. You aren't gaining a week; you're spending your next one early, on a day you chose.

That is the whole difference: **additive vs pull-forward**. And it inverts the advice.

## Claude: fire it the moment you're drained

Because the credit is extra and the clock is fixed, timing does one job only — deciding how much of your remaining quota you throw away.

- **Not before you're drained.** Firing with quota left resets a bar you hadn't finished. You're discarding the remainder for nothing, because nothing moves.
- **Not much later either.** Banking it buys only the wall-time between now and your block — the scheduled reset is coming regardless.
- **Banking is a real loss** when the credit expires before your next block would have arrived. Whether that's possible for you depends on your expiry date and how fast you burn. Check those two numbers, not your gut.

The one consequence of the clock being fixed: you cannot use this reset to choose your reset day. You don't get that lever on Claude.

## Codex: fire it when drained *and* far from the scheduled reset

On Codex the reset is a scheduling lever, and the arithmetic is different.

Because the new week is anchored to when you resume, using the reset lets you **choose your reset day**. If your automatic reset lands mid-heavy-week, a reset fired after a drain re-anchors it to something that suits you instead.

But since it's a pull-forward, "am I drained?" isn't the only question. The other is **how much distance remains to your scheduled reset** — because that distance is precisely what you're pulling forward.

- Firing when drained with four days still to run turns those four days from blocked-time into working-time.
- Firing an hour before the scheduled reset buys you almost nothing — you've forfeited a reset you were about to receive anyway.

And remember the anchor is your **first request after applying**, not the click. The day you resume is the day you're picking.

## Neither credit is divisible

It's tempting to read Codex's box — *"Use a reset to restore your 5-hour limit, weekly limit, or both"* — as a menu. It isn't. There is one Full reset and one **Use reset** button. The sentence describes what the credit *can* refresh, not a choice you make: it clears whichever of those windows is depleted.

Claude is the more confusing of the two on this point, because its panel names **5-hour reset** as a credit type of its own, sitting next to Full reset. That looks like two separate tools. It isn't — the Full reset swept the session bar as well. One credit, every bar, on both products.
