Open Systems has one design rule above all others: no account gets to be structurally special. This update is about the last place where that wasn't true here — and what replaces it.

## The problem: a central bank with extra steps

Every transaction on this forum's chain needs gas, and until now gas was priced in a token that exactly one account could issue — mine. Genesis allocation plus a faucet is a central bank, however small. Day to day it barely mattered (gas here has always been priced at zero), but structurally it contradicted everything this project claims to be. So we're deleting the token entirely, not replacing it with another one.

## What we built: work as gas

Instead of paying gas in a currency, a transaction now carries a small piece of solved computational work — a puzzle your device solves in the background in a fraction of a second. Spam stays expensive, because spamming means solving thousands of puzzles. But the "currency" is CPU time, and nobody issues CPU time. No supply, no issuer, no bank.

**Isn't that just Bitcoin?** No — and the lineage is worth being precise about. Proof-of-work is older than Bitcoin: Hashcash was using it in 1997 to make email spam expensive, which is exactly the job it does here. Bitcoin's actual innovation was pointing work at a different problem — deciding *who gets to write the global ledger* — which is what created mining, block rewards, and the hardware arms race. We use work only for what it was originally for: a private, per-transaction spam stamp. No mining, no rewards, no race — and what secures the ledger is a separate question entirely (more on that in "There is no global").

The subtle part — the piece that just landed — is *binding*. The old implementation checked the puzzle against your account only, so one solution could be reused forever: spam protection in name only. The new rule mixes your account **and that transaction's sequence number** into the puzzle. A sequence number is used exactly once, so a solution is valid for exactly one transaction. Replaying an old proof isn't detected and punished — it's structurally impossible, the way a key can't open a lock it wasn't cut for.

This is built and verified end-to-end on our staging network: a fresh account needed fresh work for each of two consecutive transactions, every replay was rejected, and the browser's solver and the chain's verifier agree byte-for-byte. It rolls out to this forum in the next deploy. Two more pieces follow shortly: making work the universal gas for every account, and letting new accounts create *themselves* with work alone — no faucet, no permission, no one to ask.

## The approach: adversarial design, phases that end with real people

Two habits shaped this work and everything that follows.

**Designs must survive attack before they're built.** The architecture below went through five rounds of independent adversarial review — critics whose only job is to break it. A design "converges" only when a full round produces zero fatal findings. Several pieces of this design exist *because* a critic killed an earlier version.

**Phases end with a person, not a test suite.** Every build phase must close with a real person, on a real machine, driving the real flow end-to-end. Test harnesses declare victory too easily; people find the seams.

## Where this goes: no global blockchain at all

The token was the warm-up. The destination: there should be no global chain anywhere in Open Systems — because for communities, a global anything is a central thing. (A single global ledger is the right shape for a global problem like money — Bitcoin does that job superbly. A forum is not a global problem.)

Instead, every community runs its **own** small ledger, on its own members' machines. The same app you use to read and post *is* the validator — founding a community will be something one person does on a home computer, not a protocol event requiring anyone's blessing.

Inside a community, your validation weight is the XP you've earned **there** — linear, per-community, active only while your validator actually runs. Weight can't be bought, can't be delegated, and never sums across communities. Subjects mature the same way: new topics incubate under real use and graduate by community audit, not by decree — and the founder's bootstrap privileges are designed to dissolve, visibly, as the community matures.

Between communities there is no protocol-level anything: communities connect only by *explicitly recognizing* each other, and either side can walk away. And the exit is real — if a community's leadership goes bad, its members can fork away carrying their content, their history, and their earned standing with them. Leadership that can't hold anyone hostage has to stay worth following.

This forum keeps running exactly as it is while that architecture is built alongside it, phase by phase; when it's ready, this community moves over with content and XP intact.

All of it is being built in the open. If you see a hole in the design — that's what this forum is for. Post it.
